Friday, September 5, 2008 The Namesake describes the struggles between two first generation Indian immigrants, from West Bengal to the United States, Ashima Ganguli and Ashoke Ganguli, and their children, Gogol and Sonali. With little interest in their ancestry, both Gogol and Sonia disappoint their parents by having little respect for the sacrifices their parents made for them. Gogol's desire to change his name, and his relationship with a wealthy American girl (Jacinda Barrett), places a strain on the family which Gogol will later regret. The film chronicles Gogol's cross-cultural experiences and his exploration of his Indian heritage, as the story shifts between the United States and India.
